Telecommunications AirTel rolls out in Andamans; Rs 20-cr investment on cards Our Bureau
Kolkata , March 23 BHARTI Cellular Ltd today launched the AirTel brand mobile service in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, which is part of the West Bengal Telecom Circle. According to the company, an investment of Rs 20 crore has been earmarked for the cellular rollout in the islands. Speaking to Business Line from Port Blair, Mr Manoj Kohli, President of Bharti Cellular Ltd, said that the mobile service would be available in Port Blair and adjoining islands, to begin with. With the teledensity in the islands being higher than the national average, Bharti is optimistic about generating a sizeable customer base in the months ahead. Mr Kohli said that the rollout in the islands was based on a GPRS mobile network that has been deployed on a VSAT backbone in partnership with Siemens. All nationally available customised products and services of AirTel would also be available to customers in the islands. As a promotional offer, Airtel customers in the islands can call any AirTel number in Kolkata and Chennai for Re 1 a minute. "Most people in the islands call either Chennai or Kolkata and, hence, we have this promotional offer for them," Mr Kohli said.
