Power Pvt power producers to add 3,000 MW capacity in Maharashtra Our Bureau
Mumbai , March 23 PRIVATE sector power companies would be adding fresh capacity to the tune of 3,000 MW in Maharashtra over the next couple of years. The demand for energy has been on the rise in the State with no commensurate increase in power generation capacity, said Mr Dilip Walse-Patil, Energy Minister, Maharashtra, addressing the State Legislative assembly here on Wednesday. The State has also not invested in high-tension lines and substations. According to estimates, a whopping Rs 56,000 crore would be needed to overhaul the power generation, transmission and distribution system in the State, he said. ``In the likelihood of Enron being restarted, NTPC would run it in the first phase and it would take one and half years for the power to reach Maharashtra consumers,'' Mr Patil said. Meanwhile, the State Government will discontinue the system of load shedding during evening all over Maharashtra in the next one year. The Government is implementing a project to convert all three-phase lines to a single phase one. The investment that is going into this project is about Rs 500 crore, said Mr Patil. Currently, there is load shedding to the tune of 3,000 MW in the State that is likely to shoot up to 3,800 MW during the summer months. Load shedding in rural Maharashtra lasts six hours, while urban areas in the State face three hours of load shedding. Transmission and distribution losses in the State are put at 36 per cent and efforts are on to reduce it to 26 per cent. The private companies that sold power to the Maharashtra State Electricity Board during the year included Power Trading Corporation, Tata Power Company, Adani Exports Ltd and Global Energy Ltd.
