Maruti plans to launch compact car Swift soon

Our Bureau

Bangalore , March 23

MARUTI Udyog's proposal to introduce the compact car, Swift, is on course and the car will make its bow in a few months. It will be a petrol car and would be produced in its factory here with only 30 per cent import content , according to Mr Jagdish Khattar, Managing Director.

Speaking to newspersons, Mr Khattar said that the proposed diesel engine manufcturing plant would be ready by next year, ahead of the company's plan to set up another manufacturing plant. Both would come up in Manesar near Gurgaon in Haryana.

The civil work of the engine plant has commenced and production would start in 2006.

The facility would cater to the needs of Maruti in India and Suzuki's global requirements.

The capacity of the plant is expected to be 1,00,000 engines with the capability to scale up to 3,00,000.

Mr Khattar refused to be specific on whether the growing popularity of Alto was cutting into Maruti 800 sales, only saying, "both are growing."

He also answered in the negative on the possible revision in the price of cars in view of the rising steel price. "We have to see the overall economy and to what extent the customers can absorb it."

Later, he inaugurated the Maruti Driving Training School (MDS).

The school, equipped with modern simulator, would provide comprehensive training to learners.
