Non-conventional Energy Study advocates marketing network for bio-diesel plants Our Bureau
Hyderabad , March 23 WITH bio-diesel becoming a buzzword in the country, it is time for the Government and its institutions to take a careful and planned approach to promote the high performing alternative fuel, says a research study. In a paper submitted at the national convention on `Bio-diesel for energy security and rural prosperity: Opportunities and challenges' here on Monday, Dr B. Joseph, a senior scientist with Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University, said farmers were being carried away by some advertisements and taking up jatropha cultivation in a big way. They were doing this with no knowledge of the quantity of the end product they would get and how to market their products. He said efforts should be made to utilise the existing potential through proper seed collection by establishing a network in rural areas. The Government institutions should encourage entrepreneurs to establish oil expellers on a small scale and then on large scale. He said a training programme for raising of jatropha nursery techniques and plantation in wastelands had been going on in ten districts through district watershed management authority. Besides creating widespread awareness about bio-diesel plantations among the farming community, it was very important to put in place well-knit marketing facilities in order to help entrepreneurs with marketing of by-products such as cakes, soap waste and glycerine. The Government and Government institutes should strive to encourage tripartite agreement among growers, entrepreneurs and government departments for successful implementation of bio diesel initiatives. He also stressed on the need to fix a minimum support price well in advance to increase confidence in farmers and entrepreneurs.
