Wildlife Animal exchange programme Our Bureau
HYDERABAD: Under an animal exchange programme, the Nehru Zoological Park, Hyderabad, has received five (two males and three females) "Manipur Brow Antlered Deer" or Thamin Deer in exchange for three Asiatic Lions from the National Zoo, New Delhi. Also called the `Dancing Deer', the Thamin Deer is the Indian form of three sub-species of Eld's deer (first described by Col. Percy Eld), the others are in Myanmar and Thailand. It is an endangered species. It is currently distributed in small area called Logtak Lake in the Keibul Lamjao National Park in Manipur State. The `brow antlered' refers to the peculiar shape of the antlers which are curved forward and continue outwards to side. The Nehru Zoological Park, with the infrastructure facilities available, is planning for the conservation breeding of this species. The animals will be displayed after they settle down in the new environment.
