Outlook Money & Banking - Public Sector Banks Cisco to scale up SBI's IP telephony network Moumita Bakshi
Recently in Kovalam , March 24 TERMING India as amongst the fastest growing markets in Asia-Pacific, global networking major Cisco Systems has said it would scale up IP telephony connectivity for State Bank of India (SBI) to 10,000 branches in six months, from the existing 6,000 branches. "This is a part of a larger order that includes components including data connectivity (like routers), IP telephony and security solutions. As far as IP telephone deployment for SBI is concerned, it will be ramped up to 10,000 branches from the 6,000 branches at present," Mr Jangoo Dalal, Senior Vice-President - Enterprise and Commercial, Cisco Systems (India and SAARC), said here. He said that the SBI deployment was one of the largest in India and Asia-Pacific region. "This will enable core-banking applications. It will allow the bank to offer customers anytime, anywhere banking," he added. Cisco has shipped over 50,000 IP phones in India in the last 18 months, and is bullish about the market. "The sectors that would drive the IP telephony business include the outsourcing/call centre operations and enterprise space like banks. Manufacturing too is picking up, and more and more companies are seeing benefits in IP telephony," Mr Rangu Salgame, President - India and SAARC, Cisco Systems, said. The company has a goal to increase the employee productivity by 50 per cent over the next five years and achieve a goal of $1 million revenue per employee. In the financial year 2004, its productivity revenue per employee stood at $700,000. "The target is for all Cisco employees including India," he added. Globally, the company employs 35,000 professionals, while this number in India stands at about 800.
