Telecommunications Info-Tech - Telecommunications For Lucent, India is outstanding Our Bureau
Bangalore , March 25 TELECOM gear maker Lucent Technologies is keen to leverage the Indian technology skill sets even as it evaluates building newer products. The company has more than doubled its headcount in India to about 1,300 over the last one year as it moved more work offshore. Ms Janet Davidson, President, Integrated Network Solutions, Lucent, said the Indian software talent pool is very attractive. "We will consider our teams here for certain new products that we are evaluating." However, Ms Davidson did not spell out the specific details. As part of its strategy to globalise its workforce, Lucent moved about 110 data networking jobs to its Bangalore facility after it decided to shut down its R&D unit in Maryland last month. The Lucent team in India is focussed on developing hardware and software products in mobility, data, network management and element management, R&D in CDMA and wideband CDMA, among others. The India team is also working on developing applications for segments such as pre-paid, post-paid, short messaging services and ring back tone. "The Indian market is outstanding for Lucent," Ms Davidson said. "The fact that the Indian market is growing very fast and expected to sustain this growth for a longer period makes it different from others," she said. While there are pockets of growth in other countries, there is broad-based growth across Lucent's product profile in India, she added. Lucent, Ms Davidson said, has left its financial crisis behind and is focussed on achieving a profitable revenue growth. The company sees broadband access as a global growth phenomenon, both in wireless and wireline technologies. "We see growth opportunities in areas such as 3G-UMTS, DSL and WiMAX, among others," Ms Davidson said.
