Environment Flue gas project: REL surprised by Dahanu eco body's guarantee demand Our Bureau
Mumbai , March 26 RELIANCE Energy Ltd (REL), in a press release issued here on Saturday, expressed `surprise' that the Dahanu Taluka Environment Protection Authority has ordered the company to submit a bank guarantee of Rs 300 crore for setting up a flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) plant. According to a REL spokesman, the Dahanu Thermal Power Station (DTPS), where the plant is being set up, is among one of the 10 best power plants in the world and the company has already submitted a schedule of implementation the FGD project to the environment body. "The levels of emission at DTPS do not create any problems to human life or agriculture produce. "The plant is operating well within the environmental norms specified by the country's regulatory authorities and its emission levels are lower than those prescribed by bodies such World Bank and WHO," the spokesman said. According to the release, FGD is a process that converts air pollution into water pollution and can cause more harm than the benefits it can accrue. As on date, no effluent norms have been specified for the FGD plant process by the statutory authorities, it said
