Mumbai , March 27

AFTER a successful re-run in Indian theatres, Mughal-e-Azam, the 1960 classic, is now heading to the UK and the US.

The restored coloured version of the film is slated for release on April 1 in these two countries for which UTV has won the overseas distribution rights.

UTV is releasing the film with 46 prints - 32 prints in the US and 14 prints in the UK.

According to an official at the company, the pre-release response to the film has been stupendous, prompting UTV to go in for the release with several prints.

The marketing and publicity of the film, which is a love story between a commoner and Prince Salim, son of Emperor Akbar, has been received very well. The movie was directed by Mr K. Asif.

Mughal-e-Azam, which took 12 years to make, made a comeback into the domestic theatrical circuit on November 12, 2004 drawing full houses into its fourth and fifth weekends, while other films were struggling to survive even the first week in theatres.

The film, which stars legendary actors Prithviraj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, Madhubala and Durga Khote and features songs by the well-known Hindustani classical singer Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, has been sub-titled in English for its overseas release, the official at UTV said.

"Our strategy is to release the film for the Indian diaspora. But there is interest in the film beyond this category. We would be keen to look at this segment too," he said.
