THE Capital City Development Forum, a pressure group that supports development activities in Thiruvananthapuram, has said that it would be forced to launch an agitation to push for the proper development of the city.
Except for a recently launched project to improve the city's roads, the development of Thiruvananthapuram has been ignored for several decades, said Mr M. Vijayakumar, Chairman, Capital City Development Forum.
Speaking at a press conference in the city today, he said the forum welcomes the State Government's proposal to include the development of Thiruvananthapuram in its one-year action plan. However, more steps need to be taken to improve conditions in the city, he added.
In a memorandum submitted recently to the Chief Minister, Mr Oommen Chandy, the forum has requested the State Government to initiate immediate measures to turn the Thiruvananthapuram international airport into a world-class facility. Though land for the construction of a new airport terminal was acquired several months ago, construction work on the new building has not yet started, Mr Vijayakumar pointed out. The Government must take urgent steps to remedy the situation, he added.
Similarly, no action has been taken to set up the Thiruvananthapuram Bench of the Kerala High Court, he said. The city is the only State capital that does not have a Bench of the High Court, he added.
