Economic census in Madurai soon

Madurai , March 28

THE Fifth Economic Census of Madurai district for update of data relating to number of enterprises and workers at village and block levels for use as the frame for follow-up surveys is to be carried out shortly.

According to the District Collector, Mr D. Rajendiran, who inaugurated a two-day State-level programme for the purpose, "the exercise is meant for measuring the country's economic development."

The census would provide particulars on location, nature of operation and employment of enterprises in the district, in addition to sampling frames to be utilised for detailed enterprise-related surveys. Comprehensive information on the number and distribution of enterprises by industry, type of ownership, fuel used, perennial or seasonal, number of workers employed, source of finance and agency of registration are to be gathered.

As per the Fourth Economic Census carried out in 1998, the district accounted for 1,01,625 enterprises with nearly 34.8 per cent of them located in rural areas, providing to employment to 3,37,515 persons.

The nation-wide Fifth Economic Census is to commence from May, the official sources said.
