Bedlam, walkout over irrigation tenders

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, March 29

THE State Assembly was adjourned on Tuesday amidst uproarious scenes with the members of the Opposition Telugu Desam Party stalling the proceedings and demanding immediate discussion on the issue of alleged irregularities in finalising the tenders of irrigation projects involving several crores of rupees.

The furore was marked by TDP members frequently rushing to the podium and raising slogans against the ruling Congress Government, prompting speaker, Mr K.R. Suresh Reddy, to adjourn the House thrice in quick succession before adjourning it for the day.

As soon as the House assembled for the day, the TDP members moved an adjournment motion on the alleged irregularities in irrigation tenders. Subsequently, they insisted that the Speaker should take up discussion on the notice they have given under rule 304 to raise the issue in the House.

However, there had been another notice given under the same rule by the members of the Communist Parties to raise the issues pertaining to the plight of artisans in the State.

As this notice was given prior to the notice issued by the TDP, the Speaker said that as per the Rules of the Assembly it had to be taken first for discussion.
