Our Bureau

Kochi , March 29

THE Ernakulam District has achieved a record gross revenue collection of Rs 4,700 crore during the financial year 2004-05, exceeding the target of Rs 4,050 crore.

The District Collector, Mr A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish, said at a press meet that almost all the government departments had recorded progress in revenue collections and the record figures were achieved despite negative conditions such as natural calamities, lottery ban and crisis in the farming sector.

The figures, which were worked out at a meeting of the District Level Revenue Committee (DLRC) are calculated taking into account the amount that will be collected till the end of the current fiscal, on March 31, he said.

The highest contribution, he said was from the National Savings Scheme, which had made a record collection of Rs 610 crore against the target of Rs 488 crore. The gross collection for the last financial year (2003-04) was Rs 476 crore.

However, he pointed out that the NSC collection did not include too many bulk deposits from institutions or business groups. No institution has made a bulk deposit exceeding Rs 10 crore. The bulk of the NSC collection came from the common people collected through Mahila Pradhan agents. The gross collection in commercial tax was Rs 3,698 crore against last year's Rs 3,400 crore.
