VAT extended to UTs

NEW DELHI: The Cabinet on Tuesday decided to extend the value-added tax (VAT) regime in the Union Territories of Daman & Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli through an Ordinance.

The Cabinet gave its approval for promulgation of the Daman and Diu Value-Added Tax Regulation, 2005 and the Dadra and Nagar Haveli Value-Added Tax Regulation 2005 by the President under Article 240 of the Constitution and repeal the existing tax laws, according to an official statement.

The VAT regime will be implemented in 21 States from April 1 this year. "The VAT structure will rationalise the overall tax burden, simplify it and make it more transparent leading to improved tax compliance and increase in revenue," the statement added.
