Govt approves Rs 3,358.7 cr for Defence purchases

THE Government today gave approval to the Defence Ministry to purchase equipment and set up Defence facility worth Rs 3,358.69 crore.

The approvals include building a composite propellant facility at Nashik at a cost of Rs 324 crore (with forex component of Rs 53.6 crore), and establishing imagery interpretation team at divisional headquarters at a total cost of Rs 393 crore (with Rs 38.3 crore of annual recurring expenditure), said the Defence Minister, Mr Pranab Mukherjee.

Another proposal for induction of nine offshore petrol vessels for the Navy - three of which are for Goa shipyards, with six in-principle approvals for construction - at a cost of Rs 1,084 crore, including forex component of Rs 222 crore, was approved by the Cabinet Committee on Security.

Also approved was the proposal to purchase one Complete-303 submarine fire torpedo decoy system (SFTDS) along with transfer of technology from an Italian firm at a cost of Rs 355 crore.

The Government has also approved limited upgradation of 14 carrier-based sea harriers of the Navy at a cost of Rs 476.79 crore from an Israeli firm and acquisition of 11 Dornier aircraft with other supporting equipment at a cost of Rs 726 crore, he added.

Besides, the Government has cleared a proposal from HAL to undertake cost and time revision of Intermediate Jet Trainer for Rs 467 crore, the original cost being Rs 180 crore.
