THE Bombay Metal Exchange (BME) has decided to join the three-day bandh to protest against certain stringent clauses coming under value-added tax (VAT) to be implemented from April 1.
"We have appealed to all our members in the metals market to stop loading and unloading material on March 30-31 and April 1 to show our support and solidarity to the Federation of Associations of Maharashtra (FAM)," Mr Surendra Mardia, Senior Vice-President, BME, said. FAM has given a call for bandh on March 30-31 and April 1 to protest against the implementation of VAT, a BME release said.
"The exchange has always been welcoming VAT. With its implementation, turnover tax and surcharge are being abolished. But we would only like to register our protest against certain stringent clauses coming under VAT, such as unreasonable powers given to officers, which can prove harmful to the business community. It is not going to be of any help. It will rather increase harassment and corruption," he said.
