New Delhi , March 29

THE Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Assocham) on Tuesday said that it does not favour the insertion of a hire and fire policy for industrial labour. It advocates the creation of a "social safety net" in the proposed labour reforms laws.

At a meeting convened by the Minister for Labour and Employment, Mr K. Chandra Shekhar Rao, the Assocham President, Mr Mahendra K. Sanghi, sought flexibility in the labour laws for higher employment generation, restructuring, modernisation, retrenchment and even the closure of unviable industrial units.

Mr Sanghi said in today's environment, the permanency of a job is outdated, and that every job has to be on contract. "If a person performs well and his services are needed, he should not be afraid of losing the job. But there cannot be free lunch anymore.
