Taxation Service tax issue: KCCI decides to continue with non-compliance Our Bureau
Mangalore , March 30 THE emergency meeting of the members of the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) on Wednesday decided to continue with the non-compliance movement against service tax on transport of goods by road. These members are on a non-compliance movement for the past three months. The meeting - which was in favour of making representations to the parent bodies such as Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI) and Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) in this matter - decided to write to the Government expressing traders' displeasure over imposition of service tax on service receivers. The KCCI President, Mr A. Srinivasa Rao, said that the Government should not impose service tax on service receivers in the case of transport of goods by road. The meeting witnessed heated arguments, with a section of traders favouring the registration of service receivers and not to go on with non-compliance movement. However, a majority of members suggested that they continue with the non-compliance movement and decided not to heed to any bandh call in this regard and continue business as usual. Mr G. Vishwanath Kamath, former KCCI Secretary, who suggested that the members continue with non-compliance movement, said: "They should be ready to face any consequences while continuing with it." Mr Jaiwanth Kamath, KCCI member, said that the members should comply with the law. The Chamber should apprise the Government on the lacunae in the law, he added.
