Industry Associations National strategy on R&D advocated Our Bureau
Kochi , March 31 INDIA needs to have a national strategy to make the country the leading destination for research and development (R&D) in the world in the next one decade, according to a seminar on innovation. Mr Vinay Deshpande, Chairman and CEO of Encore Software, which developed the low-cost computer, Simputer, expressed serious concern over high rate of foreign technology licensing and low rate of technology absorption, despite the country having very resourceful scientists and quality scientific research institutions. Innovations not only help in breaking the mould but also yield higher returns. Time is now ripe for India to become a new driver of markets for information technology companies, Mr Deshpande said, in a statement issued by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), which organised the seminar. Focussing on the significance of intellectual property rights and developing products for the local needs, he pointed out the need for an innovation-driven national economy, educational system, communication and government-citizen interface. Mr Rajiv Narang, Chairman and Managing Director of Erewhon Consulting, said innovation is not just about a breakthrough idea, but also about the feasibility of the idea to stand the test of the market. Mr C.A. Abdul Bashir, Eco-Tourism Officer of the Periyar Tiger Reserve at Thekady, spoke of the increasing significance of eco-tourism and the involvement of local community in the sustained successful management of the reserve. Eco-tourism for local development has resulted in social equity, economic stability and sustainable generation of local resources. Pre-requisites of community-based eco-tourism include local products, empowered and capacitated community, centralised control or regulatory framework and transparent fiscal instruments.
