Industry Associations Infrastructure, HR top concerns of new Nasscom team Our Bureau
New Delhi , March 31 ISSUES relating to the improvement of physical infrastructure and increasing the supply of skilled manpower to meet the burgeoning human resource needs of the software industry figure high on the priority list of Nasscom's new Vice-Chairman, Mr B. Ramalinga Raju. "Some enabling aspects for realising the huge potential that the software industry has need to be addressed. We need to put in process, systems and policies commensurate with the requirements of global trade. Another focus area is the ability to lay the foundation for human resource," Mr Raju said. Pointing out that the attrition rate for the business process outsourcing industry hovered at between 40 per cent and 50 per cent, he said, "The quality of education too has to be at a different level." He said that the future of the industry would be defined by "innovation". "In the next few months, we will set a roadmap for the next three years, which would act as our guidepost," he said. Speaking on the occasion, the Nasscom President, Mr Kiran Karnik, said that while the high attrition rate was a point of concern, the industry had learnt to deal with it. "The good news is that the attrition is inter-company. So one does not see individuals moving out of the industry too much. The prime issue is that of inadequate supply of people with the right skill sets, and towards this, Nasscom is taking various steps." In the next two months, Nasscom plans to roll out an industry-led pilot programme for BPO certification in a few cities, he pointed out. On the proposed taxation of fringe benefits, Mr Raju said, "In my personal capacity I can say that any measure on part of the Government that affects the remuneration package of associates is a concern. Nasscom has taken up this issue with the Government."
