THE Tamil Nadu Government has sought the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh's support to ensure that an automobile testing facility is set up in Chennai.

In a letter to him, the Chief Minister, Ms Jayalalithaa, has said that Chennai should be the first choice for the Rs 1,800-crore automobile test track under consideration by the Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises.

A delegation from the Ministry had inspected two sites near here and held discussions with the State Government on December 15, 2004. The State Government is fully committed to supporting this venture, the letter said.

Chennai is the home of major automobile companies such as Ford, Hyundai, Mitsubishi, Ashok Leyland, TVS Motors, MRF and TAFE. Auto components sector is booming with 35 per cent of the country's component production coming from units in Chennai.
