Kolkata , April 2

THE Rs 100-crore turnover B.P. Poddar group of companies, which has interests in textiles, real estate and education, has unveiled plans to diversify into the healthcare sector in a big way.

The group, which is setting up a 220-bed, multi-speciality hospital here at an investment of Rs 60 crore, has announced plans to set up a dental college and hospital and a medical college and hospital which will entail an investment of Rs 28 crore and Rs 100 crore, respectively.

Stating this at a press conference held here, Mr Arun Poddar, Chairman, said the hospital in Kolkata would be the hub for a chain of diagnostic centres, clinics and outreach centres that would be set up in different parts of the city.

Plans in the long-term include replicating the hub-and-spoke model in non-urban centres elsewhere in the State as well.

Mr Poddar said that while 50 beds at the hospital were already operational, the entire facility would be up and running in8-12 months.

Money for the project has been raised by way of debt and equity in the ratio of 1:1. The project's payback period has been pegged at 8-10 years.

According to him, the proposed dental college and hospital would be set up at Kamarhati on the outskirts of Kolkata under a trust.

A formal clearance from the State health department was awaited before the project can take off.

Similarly, plans were afoot to set up a medical college, which would have the capacity to train 100 students plus additional paramedical staff at an investment of Rs 100 crore.

The proposed facility would be spread over a 25-acre campus, Mr Poddar said.
