Bangalore , April 2

HINDUSTAN Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) has entered the $1-billion league of domestic companies — its provisional 2004-05 sales turnover has touched Rs 4,425 crore with a profit of Rs 630 crore.

The figures represent a growth of 16.4 and 5.1 per cent, respectively over the Defence PSU's sales and profit numbers for the previous year. HAL had posted a turnover of Rs 3,690 crore and a profit of Rs 445 crore during 2003-04.

Export performance at Rs 149 crore, was, however, lower than last fiscal's figure of Rs 215 crore.

During 2004-05, HAL said it saw a few milestones — it handed over the first batch of indigenously produced Su-30 MKI fighters to IAF and also completed supplies of the twin-seater Jaguar project with indigenously upgraded avionics and mission computer.

A number of its star product, the advanced light helicopter Dhruv, was produced for domestic customers. The company said it was progressing rapidly on the weapon system integration for the ALH. One Dhruv was leased to Israeli aviation major IAI.

HAL also established comprehensive maintenance facilities for the Navy's Sea King helicopter and UAVs (unmanned air-borne vehicles).

On the global front, it said it had established itself as a reliable partner and supplier of aerospace products. Several international aerospace majors had expressed readiness to collaborate with HAL for sourcing, co-production and co-development of components and systems.

European aircraft major Airbus, for instance, placed a repeat order for 1,000 shipsets of A320 forward passenger doors. The company also signed contracts with Eurocopter for the supply of major assemblies and components for its Fennec helicopter; with Bell Helicopters for tail rotor blade assemblies; and with RAC-MiG for supply of avionics of MiG-29 aircraft.

HAL said it planned to further consolidate its performance with ongoing and future programmes such as the production of Su-30MKI and Hawk advanced jet trainer, certification and series production of light combat aircraft Tejas, certification of the indigenous intermediate jet trainer, supply of strike-version Jaguars, Dorniers Do-228, upgradation of Sea Harrier. Also to be developed are the light combat helicopter and the combat air trainer.

The re-engined Cheetal helicopter created a world record by landing at the height of 25,150 ft, while Dhruv set a record of flying at an altitude density of 27,000 ft. Another re-engined `Chetan' copter is undergoing flight evaluation.
