`Look for less energy dependent patterns for growth'

Our Bureau

New Delhi , April 3

WHILE reorganising its hydrocarbon sector, India needs to look for less energy dependent patterns of economic development, Dr Pierre Terzian, Director, Petrostrategies, said.

In his presentation on `Oil Market Perspectives and India' at the Gaz De France India meet, here on Friday, he said to counter the current oil market situations, the options available before India included, "going for less energy dependent patterns."

The other options available before India were increasing domestic search for energy sources and boosting access of `Indian' oil and gas in foreign countries. "These would require a lot of effort," he said.

To diversify into the concept of energy mix (to switch over to other sources energy) could be another option, which can be tapped, Dr Terzian stated. Further, Indian companies could also look at increasing investments in research and development (R&D) in non-conventional energy sources, he said. "High prices would motivate investments in R&D to work out other options," Dr Terzian said.

Endorsing the Sudan example, Dr Terzian said, "Developing nations like India would also have to look for niche areas for growth in the sector."
