THE Director of Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology , Dr Lalji Singh, has called for the launch of a national innovation movement to make India a `Knowledge Superpower' and leader in science and technology.
Delivering the 21st convocation of the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University here on Monday, he said making India a world-class knowledge society was going to be the biggest challenge in the 21st century.
"To face this challenge, we must restructure, modernise and de-bureacratise the universities and publicly funded research and development institutions," he said.
There is a need to enhance the national investment in education and R&D and minimise brain drain.
Besides presenting degrees, Mr Sushil Kumar Shinde, Governor and Chancellor of the University, awarded 82 gold medals to students for excelling in different categories of education.
Dr Prathap C. Reddy, Chairman of Apollo Hospitals group, and Mr G.M. Rao, Chairman of GMR group, were conferred Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in recognition of their contribution in their chosen fields.
