AP secures maximum co-op development aid

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , April 4

FOR the first time in history, Andhra Pradesh has topped the list of States in the country in securing the maximum assistance of Rs 185 crore during the year 2004-05 for cooperative development in the State from the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC). The State achieved this by leaving behind States such as Maharashtra and Kerala, which used to garner a lion's share of assistance every year.

In a press release, NCDC said AP has availed itself of the assistance for procurement and marketing operations of agriculture produce by AP Markfed, financing working capital requirement of seven cooperative sugar factories by AP State Cooperative Bank (APCOB) and implementation of a fisheries development project for tsunami affected fishermen cooperative societies all along the coast line of the State.

The assistance was also availed for grounding implementation of three integrated cooperative development projects in the districts of Nellore, Medak and Warangal by APCOB, for modernisation of the rice mill of the Mulkanoor Cooperative Rural Bank and Marketing Society of Karimnagar district for colour grading of rice for export purpose, and for the Mori Handloom Weavers Cooperative Production and Sales Society in East Godavari district.

According to NCDC, the achievement of State could not be possible but for the State Government's farmer-friendly policies and proactive timely initiatives that encouraged NCDC to supplement the efforts of AP Government with liberal assistance for strengthening the cooperative sector in the State. These initiatives would ultimately benefit the farmers in agriculture and allied activities, the release said.
