Kolkata Customs tops revenue target

Our Bureau

Kolkata , April 4

THE revenue collections of Kolkata Customs for 2004-05 have exceeded the target of Rs 3,851 crore by Rs 99.84 crore (or three per cent) to Rs 3,950.84 crore. The increase is significant when viewed against the shortfall during 2003-04 of Rs 77.2 crore.

It may be noted that for the last six years, the performance has been somewhat negative (from 1998-99 onwards).

Speaking to newspersons, Mr Abhijit Bhattacharjee, Commissioner of Customs (Port), conceded that the department has traditionally been shy "largely owing to couple of high-profile publicity blitzes in the recent past, admittedly because of avoidable action and error of judgement by some of our fraternity".

The revenues realised during the year under review have increased by 34.48 per cent over the previous fiscal's Rs 2,937.80 crore.

The top ten importing companies during 2003-04 and 2004-05 were IOC, Tisco, Haldia Petrochemicals, SAIL, Indian Rayon, Telco, Exide Industries, Nicco Corporation, Phillips Carbon and Berger Paints.

On recovery of arrears, the Commissioner said that against a target of Rs 27.60 crore for 2004-05, Rs 54.64 crore was achieved.

According to Mr M.K. Kedia, Deputy Commissioner of Customs (Preventive), 99 per cent of the shipping bills and 85 per cent of the bills of entry are now being received at Custom House through the EDI (electronic data interchange) system. Once the risk management system is put in place, things would be speeded up, he added.
