Call to provide proper training to seafarers

Kochi , April 5

SHIPPING experts have stressed the need for providing proper training to maritime personnel in the country to meet the growing requirements in the changed scenario.

Speaking at the 42nd Maritime Day celebrations at Kochi port, they were of the view that there was a shortage of trained seafarers both in the national and international markets. As India is emerging as a major player in the world maritime sector, a proper training to seafarers in the country is the need of the hour.

The Maritime Day celebrations this year has focussed on three significant aspects of maritime destination such as environmental protection, maritime security and paucity of trained maritime personnel.

The celebrations were organised by the National Maritime Day Celebrations Committee led by Mr P. K. Majumder, Surveyor Incharge, Mercantile Marine Department.

Experts, who presented papers on the theme, outlined the nature and scope of India's maritime future. They pointed out that the country's awareness on the importance of protecting the environment was minimal when compared to advanced countries. Environmental awareness has to be incorporated into every contract that relates to maritime policies, they said.

In the same way, maritime security must be given its rightful place. India needs to evolve a security strategy involving all players in the field such as the Indian Navy, Coast Guard and the Coastal Police.
