VAT implementation

It is unfortunate that "Political consensus vital for VAT implementation... says Sinha" (Business Line, April 3). The discussions on VAT were going on for about 10 years. All the Finance ministers except of course, UP had accepted it. The West Bengal Finance Minister chaired the Empowered Committee. All the states that agreed were ready to implement it.

VAT can arrest tax evasion and curb black money transactions. The consumer benefits from a reduction in prices and the State earns more revenue. So opposing VAT is equivalent to being anti-people.
