Mumbai , April 6

DREAM big, dream global and focus on quality, corporatisation and corporate governance. This was the thrust of what Mr N. R. Narayana Murthy, Chief Mentor, Infosys Technologies Ltd, had to tell the Indian media and entertainment industry at the concluding session at FICCI-Frames on Thursday. If the Indian IT industry has grown to $19 billion from $75 million in 15 years, it is because it approached growth with a global mindset, Mr Murthy told delegates at the three-day conference on media and entertainment.

He urged the industry to look at the global market and focus on global themes. "Media industry should look at global market and not just the ethnic global market that is there in Southall in the UK or Queens in New York. You also need to look at global themes such as adventure, history," he said.

In an inspired speech punctuated by applause, Mr Murthy emphasised that corporatisation, particularly in the film and small-scale television industry, is imperative. "With corporatisation, you get power of scalability," he said. "As you corporatise, you need investments and then you need investors. You need to uphold corporate governance to get high-quality investors." But corporatisation entails a host of processes such as bringing in higher transparency in operations, enhancing quality and retaining high quality talent, he said. A total focus on corporate governance and ethical practices are absolutely essential. "Our motto at Infosys is that when in doubt, disclose," he said.

He also urged the industry to go in for quality certification and focus on retaining good people. "It is important to recruit, enable, empower and retain the best talent. You are only as good as your people," he said.
