Ahmedabad , April 6

KANDLA port in Gujarat has recorded a marginal increase in the traffic handled during the recently concluded financial year, with the total cargo throughput reaching 41.54 million tonnes (mt) in 2004-05.

Kandla had handled 41.52 mt of cargo in 2004-05 against 40.63 mt in the previous year, according to port officials. Dry cargo traffic rose 4 per cent and liquid cargo 28 per cent. But crude oil handled at its Vadinar terminal declined by 13 per cent due to a shut down in the refineries of its client, Indian Oil Corporation. Container cargo handling also rose 6 per cent to 1.8 lakh twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) against 1.7 lakh TEUs last year.

During the year, Kandla handled 1,940 vessels against 1,823 in 2003-04. These include 1,118 dry cargo vessels and 705 liquid cargo tankers. The number of crude oil tankers at 117 was lower than last year's figure of 136. The major commodities that Kandla managed to attract during the year include coated pipes, sugar, fertilisers, petroleum products and steel scrap.
