Shipping Wipro chief sore over lack of progress in sea-port facilities Our Bureau
Kolkata , April 6 MR Azim Premji, Chairman of Wipro Ltd, has expressed dissatisfaction over lack of progress in development of new sea-port facilities in the country. He also identified water resources and power as the two other areas that need immediate attention. Addressing an interactive session on "Creating a world-class enterprise with diverse growth engines", organised by FICCI, Mr Premji said that the country had experienced unparallel improvements in telecom sector, especially in wireless telephony. Private investment was also underway in roads and airport sectors. "However, no such development is witnessed in the sea ports sector," he said adding that port congestions may prove costly to the country in the long run. Apart from ports, he also expressed concern over dropping water levels in the country and lack of reforms in the power sector, especially in distribution. "Private participation in power distribution is urgently needed." Replying to queries on China's competitiveness in the IT-enabled services, especially in the BPO sector, Mr Premji said Indian enterprise would be facing challenges from China in the next three years. Earlier, delivering the keynote address, he said that maintaining quality as perceived by the customer; focus on core competitiveness; stress on team work by being sensitive to different cultures and world class leadership were the key internal factors for creating a world class enterprise. This apart, leveraging arbitrage opportunities such as differential labour costs and taxation system are important short term business driver, he pointed out. In the medium term, an enterprise should focus on identifying technological and other opportunities.
