New Delhi , April 6

CONTINENTAL Airlines Inc is planning to commence operations on November 1, in a bid to tap the growing number of Indian travellers.

The airline plans to fly a daily non-stop flight from New York or Newark to New Delhi, using a 283-seater, Boeing 777 aircraft.

It will also provide one-stop connections to almost 150 other cities throughout North, Central and South America, the Caribbean and beyond.

However, the airline has not yet indicated its fares as yet.

According to Mr Jim Summerford, Vice-President for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, "We expect significant revenue from India." He further said that the Delhi would be a successful route and the carrier would look for more opportunities in India. "We will be able to offer Indian trans-Atlantic travellers none of our competitors can match - award winning non-stop service to New York. Our service will create a more convenient and attractive gateway to India for American visitors."

Restrictions on travel with the US, the UK and other countries have been removed to increase the number of flights to meet demand from India.

The US and India agreed in January to allow airlines from both countries to choose routes, frequency of flights and fares, and operate code-sharing agreements, as part of a plan to ease travel restrictions between them.

Besides Continental, other American carriers such as Delta Airlines and Northwest Airlines are already connecting India and the US.
