Mines Dept mops up Rs 3.22 cr in Udupi, Dakshina Kannada

THE Department of Mines and Geology collected revenue of Rs 3.22 crore in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts during 2004-05 compared to Rs 2.07 crore collected during the previous financial year.

Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, Mr I.S. Satish, Deputy Director of Mines and Geology, Mangalore, said that a major chunk of revenue (Rs 2.57 crore) came from minor minerals such as block granite, building stone, latterite stone and sand. During the period, the department sanctioned 502 mining licences, he said.

To a query on the movement of overloaded iron ore trucks in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts, he said the department's mobile squads fined 278 iron ore-laden trucks during 2004-05. The charges included overloading of lorries and fabrication of transport permits.

During the period, department's check-posts at Kannur, Mukka, Vamanjoor and Bajpe - all on the outskirts of Mangalore city - inspected 2.33 lakh vehicles and collected Rs 58.93 lakh as fine.

Asked about illegal quarrying activities at Koojimale area in Sullia taluk of Dakshina Kannada district, he said the department has submitted a report to the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Aravind Srivastav, in this regard.
