More telecom manufacturing units on the cards: Maran

New Delhi , April 7

THE Union Government on Thursday said that other telecom equipment vendors are expected to announce their plans to set up manufacturing units in the country.

"This is just the beginning. We will see some exciting announcements with respect to telecom manufacturing in the country.

"This is because of the investment-friendly policies framed by the Union Government," the Communication and IT Minister, Mr Dayanidhi Maran, said after a meeting with Nokia executives.

When asked to spell out the incentives offered by the Government to manufacturers, Mr Maran said that companies with local manufacturing units would be given preference by State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd while procuring telecom equipment.

"BSNL is planning a major expansion of 40 million new telephone lines.

"A part of this could be given to vendors with manufacturing units in the country. For this, BSNL may have to amend its procurement policy," Mr Maran said.

Mr Raimo Puntala, Senior Vice-President, Nokia, said that the environment is conducive in India to set up a manufacturing base.
