Visakhapatnam , April 8

A TECHNICAL seminar on steel technology will be conducted for three days from Saturday in the steel plant here in which the major players in construction, steel technology and project management will participate, according to a press release issued by Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd.

Mr Y. Siva Sagara Rao, Chairman and Managing Director, said that the seminar - christened Vriddhi - would serve as a platform for exchange of views and the personnel of the plant would be exposed to the latest technological developments in the field and automation systems. "This is necessary as the plant is going for expansion," he said.

He said the plant was laying great emphasis on research and development and it would concentrate on in-house research and development. The Union Steel Ministry had allocated Rs 30 crore to the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, to undertake research in steel sector. "We will depute some of our personnel to get themselves acquainted with the developments," he said.

Mr Sagara Rao said that for the first time the world production of steel had crossed the 1-billion tonne mark. China had made giant strides by producing 270 million tonnes (mt) during 2004-05 and emerging as the number one producer. India, with 33 mt of consumption and 4 mt of exports, ranked ninth in the world.

He said the steel consumption in the country was projected to go up to 60 mt by 2012 and 110 mt by 2020.
