Concor to start running daily rakes from Dadri ICD

Mamuni Das

New Delhi , April 8

ANTICIPATING strict restrictions on container movement on Delhi roads due to the Commonwealth Games (scheduled to be held here in 2010), Container Corporation of India (Concor) plans to start running a train a day from its Dadri terminal in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh to JNPT (Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust) and NSICT (Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal Ltd) terminals in Mumbai.

About eighty per cent of Concor's traffic is for the JNPT/NSCIT terminals. This would help reduce congestion from the Tughlakabad terminal located in Delhi. The inland container depot (ICD) Dadri complex is a mega terminal spread over 110 hectares, connected by six railway lines, designed to handle five lakh twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) per annum in the first phase with a possibility to enhance the capacity to 1 million TEUs per annum.

Tughlakabad terminal, on the other hand, can handle about 4.3 lakh TEUs per year.

"From the ICD in Dadri, Concor handles about 0.6 train a day on an average whereas from the Tughlakabad terminal, Concor handles an average of about eight trains a day. This is because we wait for enough demand to crop up before running daily trains," said reliable sources.

Starting April 15 this year, Concor has plans to run one train a day so that "customer confidence is built up" and users start booking Dadri instead of Tughlakabad depot.

"We have received indications from the Delhi Government that they might impose strict restrictions on movement of containers on the roads," added a senior official.

The company has four container freight stations (CFS) in joint venture with container shipping lines/private sector inside its (ICD) complex located at Dadri. The terminal has joint ventures with French container line CMA-CGM, Maersk, Transworld Group and APL.

While a part of the Dadri ICD has been developed by Concor on its own, the balance requirement is being met by entering into partnerships with private entities/container shipping lines, which will have the responsibility to develop the CFS independently. Out of these joint ventures, the one between Maersk and Concor christened Star Track Terminals Pvt Ltd has started functioning since October last year.

The joint venture container freight station with APL christened Trident Terminals Pvt Ltd and the one with Transworld Group named Albatross CFS are expected to start operations this year.
