Bhubaneswar , April 8

HINDALCO Industries Ltd, the Aditya Birla Group's flagship company, on Friday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Government of Orissa to set up a world-class aluminium complex in Orissa.

The integrated aluminium project will comprise an aluminium refinery of one million tonnes per annum, an alumina smelter plant of 2,60,000 tonnes per annum, a captive power plant of 650 MW and bauxite mines of three million tonnes annual capacity. The entire project will cost about Rs 11,000 crore.

The MoU was signed between the Hindalco Managing Director, Mr Debu Bhattacharya, and the State Industries Secretary, Mr G.C. Pati, in the presence of the Chairman of the Aditya Birla Group, Mr Kumaramangalam Birla, and the Orissa Chief Minister, Mr Naveen Patnaik.

Mr Birla said that the MoU with the Orissa Government marks a key milestone creating a very strong global growth platform for the company's aluminium business. The project will be completed in four years from now, Mr Birla said.

He also thanked the Chief Minister and the State administration for facilitating the project, which would be of world-class in every respect and create employment opportunities for nearly 4,000 persons.

Mr Patnaik expressed hope that the project would contribute to the development of the hinterland of Sambalpur and Koraput districts as well as develop the infrastructural linkages of port, rail and road connectivity. The aluminium project is expected to generate revenue of about Rs 500 crore annually to the exchequer after completion, he said.
