Indian Airlines hikes fares by 12 per cent

Our Bureau

New Delhi , April 9

DOMESTIC carrier Indian Airlines (IA) has announced a 12-per cent increase in fares after local oil companies raised prices of aviation turbine fuel.

According to a statement issued by the company, IA will implement its new rates from April 15.

The fare for travelling from Delhi to Chennai will now be Rs 13,210 compared to Rs 11,816 earlier. A ticket on the Delhi-Mumbai route will cost Rs 8,870 - up from Rs 7,941, while the Chennai-Mumbai ticket is being priced at Rs 7,160 compared to Rs 6,416 earlier. "Aviation turbine fuel accounts for one of the major cost heads for all Indian aviation companies. Such a sharp price hike, therefore, necessitates an upward revision of fares," IA said.

Oil companies increased the fuel prices by Rs 5,000 to Rs 32,250 per kilolitre on April 1.

It is learnt that other airline companies are also planning to increase their fares. IA said it would continue to offer special promotional fares and discounts such as apex fares, promotional fares, positioning flight fares and point fares. "The fares for these special schemes will also be revised upwards proportionately," it said.
