Cotton Cotton yield up 46% in last two seasons: CCI G. Gurumurthy
Coimbatore , April 10 COTTON farmers could post a 46 per cent jump in fibre yield in two crop seasons between 2002-04. They could break the yield barrier partly due to improved quality of seeds that they started using, according to Mr S.C. Grover, Chairman and Managing Director of the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI). From a per hectare yield of 302 kg in 2002-03 and 394 kg in the next year, the kappas cotton yield had touched 440 kg in 2004-05, he has said. The improved yield had also led to less application of pesticides on the crop. The farmers have now started demanding quality seeds by paying cash for their purchases, Mr Grover told the gathering at the CII's textile conference `Comptex 2005' held here recently. Though farmers faced a 20 per cent fall in price of seeded cotton this year, the total production of cotton which breached 200 lakh bales for the successive year has helped to bring down the cultivation cost for the farmers, Mr Grover said, adding that with improved quality in inputs, including quality of seeds, the countries raw cotton output may stay float at 200 lakh bales.
