Taxes Dept in Kerala being beefed up

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Assessment and Internal Audit (AIT) wings of the Commercial Taxes Department are being strengthened in the context of the implementation of Value Added Tax (VAT). Six audit units have been set up under Deputy Commissioners, an official spokesman said here.

The Thiruvananthapuram unit will have extended jurisdiction over Kollam and Pathanamthitta; Ernakulam unit over Ernakulam and Mattancherry; Kottayam over Alappuzha and Idukki districts; Palakkad over Thrissur; Kozhikode over Malappuram and Wayanad; and Kannur over Kasaragod.

Assistant Commissioners will be in charge of audit units at the district level. The internal audit will be carried out as per VAT prescriptions in future. Special units under the AIT have been wound up. However, offices handling works contract and luxury tax will continue to exist.
