THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Chief Minister, Mr Oommen Chandy, has declared open the 25-acre campus of the Mahatma Gandhi University Engineering College at a function at Muttom in the industrially backward district of Idukki.

Built at a cost of over Rs 8 crore, the campus will house five departments including the Polymer Engineering and Information Technology streams.

In his address, the Chief Minister stressed on the need for all concerned to work out a consensus to insulate higher and technical education from controversies of all sorts. The State also had to be diligent enough to make use of the potential of the emerging technologies. The State might have been acclaimed for its achievements in basic education, but it was yet to make much headway in the higher education sector.

Among those who addressed the meeting was Dr Jancy James, Vice-Chancellor; and Prof V. Unni, Registrar, Mahatma Gandhi University.
