Making VAT compulsory

Even before taking the first step forward, the Government has taken a step backward by exempting pharmaceuticals from VAT.

Now, having made an exception for one product, the Government will find it difficult to deny requests from others as well.

Even if it requires a Constitution Amendment, the Government must implement VAT in all the States, and do away with all the other taxes on goods such as CENVAT, CST, octroi, entry tax and so on.

There might be initial teething problems, but these will soon settle once the system proves to be efficient and transparent.
