Record handling of bulk iron ore lumps at Chennai port

Chennai , April 12

THE United Stevedores, one of the oldest stevedoring firms at the Chennai port, along with their shore-handling agents BL Transports, has created a new record in loading iron ore lumps in bulk from the Jawahar Docks (East) on a single day.

The vessel `Electra' loaded 31,500 tonnes of iron ore lumps on April 9. This handling surpassed the previous best of 25,809 tonnes loaded by the same firm on January 23.

The entire consignment of 45,770 tonnes, which was meant for Kariganur Mineral Mining Industry, Hospet, was loaded within 44 hours from time of commencement of loading operations, according to a press release issued by The United Stevedores.
