THE National Rural Health Mission, an integrated health programme with an outlay of Rs 6,700 crore in 2005-06 aimed at the poor has finally taken off.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, said that the slow improvement in the health status of our people has been a matter of great concern. "There is no denying the fact that we have not paid adequate attention to this dimension of development for too long,'' he said.
The Prime Minister said the Rural Health Mission was seeking to "radically overhaul" the manner of delivery of healthcare services in the country. The country needed to act quickly to bridge the income gap, the education gap and the health gap of its people, he said.
He added that the UPA Government was committed to increasing health spending from 0.9 per cent to two per cent of GDP in next few years.
"A beginning has been made in this year's Budget by increasing it by Rs 2,000 crore." Dr Singh added that the success of the mission depends on enlarging it to become a societal mission. Besides, "the monitoring systems have to become outward towards the community and not upward towards the bureaucracy."
