Kerala traders call off stir

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Opposition mounted by the trading community against implementation of the Value-Added Tax regime in the State has virtually ended with leaders of two rival bodies calling off their hunger strike in front of the Secretariat Buildings here.
The Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithy (KVVES) withdrew the strike on Sunday citing an `understanding reached with the Government' while rival Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Samithy (KVVS) called it quits on Monday after `fruitful discussions' with the Chief Minister and the Finance Minister.
KVVS leaders said the Government had agreed to discuss with the Centre if presumptive tax on small traders could be reduced from 0.5 per cent to 0.25 per cent. It had also promised to hold a meeting with traders after April 16.
According to KVVES, traders would now remit tax as per VAT schedule with effect from April 1. On its part, the Government had promised to form a committee to solve problems arising out of the implementation of VAT.
