Railways Delhi Metro Rail to prepare detailed report for Chennai Our Bureau
Chennai , April 12 THE Tamil Nadu Government has asked the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation to prepare a detailed project report for a metro rail project for Chennai. The report will be ready in six months and will cost Rs 3.30 crore, according to the Chief Minister, Ms Jayalalithaa. Once the report is ready, the Government will take steps to appoint an agency that will implement the project and mobilise funds, according to her. She said that a metro rail project for Chennai had become necessary because of the congestion on the roads and the ever-increasing vehicle population. The rail project will help plan for the city's transportation needs. The Government had earlier asked the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation to study the feasibility of implementing a metro rail project for Chennai and the corporation had identified three corridors for it. These are: a 31.54 km stretch from Tiruvottiyur in the north to the airport in the south, along the arterial Anna Salai; a 13.54 km stretch from the beach to Koyambedu on the west of the city along EVR Salai (Poonamallee High Road); and, a 21.68 km stretch from Tiruvanmiyur to Ambattur industrial estate, covering Lattice Bridge Road, Ramakrishna Mutt Road, Luz Church Road, Eldams Road, Theagaraya Road and Inner Ring Road. The third stretch could be taken up in the second phase after 2016. The Delhi Metro corporation had recommended that the project could be implemented on the first two stretches at a cost of Rs 5,086.85 crore, to be taken up between 2005 and 2010. An 8.4 km leg of the first stretch would be under ground and the rest on elevated structures. The first two stretches could carry about 10.56 lakh passengers a day, because of which those using public transport would increase to 60 per cent from 43 per cent.
