Our Bureau

New Delhi , April 13

THE number of flights to the UK from India is set to go up with the two Governments signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Wednesday.

According to this, India will be able to operate 56 flights per week from Mumbai and Delhi to London-Heathrow and unlimited flights from India to the UK on all other routes. For the UK, there will be a staggered increase of flights from London-Heathrow and Mumbai. During winter this year 42 weekly flights will be allowed to operate on this route, which will go up to 49 in summer next year and 56 by winter 2006. In addition, there can be 14 flights a week from the UK to Bangalore and Chennai and seven flights a week from the UK to any other city in India.

Currently British Airways operates 19 flights to India weekly while Air India operates 12 flights to the UK in a week. The India-UK sector is one of the most important markets for both the countries.

An official statement said that the Indian Government and the British Government had agreed in-principle in July 2004 to enhance the number of flights and increase the frequencies between the two countries.
