Visakhapatnam , April 14

THE Hindustan Shipyard Ltd here has completed the repairs to, and modernisation of, the ONGC's biggest jack-up rig (Sagar Pragati) and has bagged orders from a Chennai firm for construction of bulk carriers, according a press release issued by the authorities.

Mr R. Hansdah, the chief public relations officer, said in the press release that the ONGC rig had sailed back to Mumbai on Tuesday evening after repairs. The major repair work to the rig was carried out under the inspection of Classification Societies American Bureau of Shipping and Indian Register of Shipping.

By undertaking the repair, the HSL had gained plenty of experience and it would enable the yard to take up more such works in future. The Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) had lent assistance to the HSL in the work, the release added.

The HSL signed a contract with Goodearth Maritime Limited, Chennai, recently for construction of six 53,000 DWT bulk carriers. These vessels, of the latest design and specifications, would have service speed of more than 15 knots.

The first vessel would be delivered in 28 months and the rest at intervals of six months apiece. The HSL authorities, however, refused to mention the value of the two projects.
