Hyderabad , April 14

THE South Central Railway (SCR) will focus on areas such as passenger amenities for improvement in the current financial year.

"We will have definitive plans to specific areas that demand immediate focus," Mr D.N. Mathur, General Manager of SCR, said.

Addressing his first press conference here on Wednesday after taking over as General Manager, Mr Mathur said the zone spent Rs 41 crore during 2004-05 as against Rs 15.63 crore in the previous year. He said remodelling of stations would be his priority.

The zone, which recorded earnings of Rs 4,152.54 crore (Rs 3,702 crore) in 2004-05, was looking at Rs 4,483.34 crore this fiscal.

On extending the recently launched Secunderabad-Delhi Sampark Kranti Express to Tirupati, he said it would happen during the current financial year. "The Railways has kept its promise in starting the service. We will make necessary arrangements at Tirupati before extending the service," he said.

Originating passenger traffic stood at 205 million during 2004-05 as against 195.36 million in the previous year.

The freight load target for 2005-06 was put at 54 tonnes. "We will take up renewal of 400 track kilometres at a cost of Rs 270 crore. Last year, a length of 420-track km was renewed at a cost of Rs 297 crore," he said.

The zone would launch eight trains, including Secunderabad-Chennai Egmore Express (via Kurnool) and Secunderabad-Gudur Express (via Guntur).

Mr Mathur assured that he would provide all the help to mango traders. "Last year, 35 rakes of mango specials were pressed into service." With reference to the Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS), he said the system was picking up with the State Government running feeder services.

"The total number of passengers using the service is going up every week. The number grew from 12,000 a day in the beginning to 32,000. A combined bus-train ticket was on the cards. "When it becomes a reality, it will boost the usage," Mr Mathur said.
